There have been so many changes to algorithms, partnership programmes and regulations that at this current time, creators are struggling. Especially small ones. Whether you’re a “big or small” creator, you’re still a creator. We are all experiencing the same issue right now in terms of putting our heart and soul into a blog post, video or image for the only response to be a loss of followers. Social media platforms are weeding us out.
I want to start by saying that the words big or small in terms of a creator shouldn’t cause offence to anyone because it’s a matter of fact. We all start somewhere. The only difference between big and small creators is that small creators aren’t as well known, overly experienced or able to push themselves in the same way to fight this social media fight. Us small creators are still trying to work our way up, find our niches and learn. We don’t have the luxury of a super large follower base yet, a budget to promote our work or even the time around our full time jobs to promote our butts off. Everyone has to start at the bottom but right now it feels like social media platforms are keeping us at the bottom. We are not being supported by the platforms we choose to create on.
I feel for big and small creators at the moment, I really do. Especially in terms of the algorithm as it’s causing an issue for everyone. However, I feel for the small creators more because we are taking a noticiably big hit everyday. We are feeling disheartened and wanting to give up.
Now before someone thinks, “but it’s not about the followers”, I know it isn’t just about that. It is about doing something you love and enjoy but followers are apart of that. My logic of it is, if you’re a singer putting on a great show every week that takes a lot of time and effort to organise and no one attends, are you really going to keep organising the shows? I write to be informative, to be humorous and to share my thoughts but there isn’t a lot of point in working so hard on content, if there’s no one there to see it. If that becomes the case, I will have to guide my creativity down a different path.
So here is my idea. Promote the small creators. Simple and genius, I know.
We all like Zoella, yes, but we don’t need to talk about her every week on our social platforms. Let’s start talking about our favourite small creators, those who you like and who deserve a mention. Share your favourite video from small YouTubers and share your favourite blog post from small bloggers. Help those content creators to fight the fight. We can only hope that social platforms will frankly, get their shit together. But in the mean time supporting each other is all we can do.
